Punjab Government Home Department has put Hafiz Muhammad Saeed under house arrest in Lahore. He is alleged to be the mastermind behind the coordinated attacks which occurred in 2008 in Mumbai, India. The horrific incident took lives of more than 160 people.
He was taken into custody by the authorities at the HQ of Jammar-ud-Dawa late on Monday. He was taken to his home and the police convoy was accompanied by many of his supporters.
US government announced a $10m bounty for providing any information for his arrest and conviction, back in 2012.
Hafiz Saeed has also founded Lashkar-e-Taiba – a militant armed group. This group has taken responsibility of several attacks happened in India but he has distanced himself from the group.
However, U.S and U.N have listed JuD as a founding group of LeT. Both of these organizations and Saeed himself is facing severe international sanctions.
The U.S and Indian government has alleged that Hafiz Saeed had masterminded the Mumbai attacks which claimed lives of 166 people.
Pakistan has put a ban on LeT due to its terrorist activities since 2002. Also Pakistani authorities have listed JuD as an organization which is facing UN sanctions, along with international travel ban, assets freeze and arms embargo. However, the group has been working openly all over Pakistan.
Four other person – Zafar Iqbal, Abdullah Ubaid, Qazi Kashif Niaz and Abdur Rehman Abid are also detained. These detentions are made under Section 11-EEE of Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act.
